The Educational Value of Cooking with Kids

For most of us, the use of the words, “education” and “cooking” in the same sentence conjure up memories of 7th grade home economics class.

You remember don’t you? Burned fingers, egg shells in the dried out brownies, bottoms popped by the class clown who had stolen his neighbor’s dish towel, and the fire alarm, set off; at least once a year, without fail. My husband was “Home Ec. Boy of the Year in 7th grade.”

The educational value of cooking need not be confined to the middle school classroom.

There is much good to be had from establishing the regular habit of cooking with children.

It is All About the Broth!

Bone broth is the cornerstone of healing and maintaining health.

My belief in broth as a foundational healer is based on experience:

  • Enhanced sleep
  • Reduced injury pain
  • Stronger teeth and bones
  • Reduced food cravings
  • Greatly reduced “shakes” that are attributed to hypoglycemia
  • Improved hair, nails and skin

Bone Broth is an amazingly nutrient dense food.

How To Choose An Alternative or Complementary Medicine Practitioner

Food is the foundation for vibrant health, as I discussed in the Five First Steps to Better Health article, but the journey is BIG. Sometimes your body needs more.

Here is a recent example from my life:

Due to severe financial hardships from repeat layoffs and anxiety around money, I developed severe insomnia. I couldn’t break the pattern, even when a job and money became abundant again. Exhaustion, irregular heartbeat and premenopausal symptoms resulted because my adrenal glands were exhausted.

In this case, food was not going to fix the problem, but homeopathy and Oriental medicine did in less than a month.

There are many examples where more help is needed or desired and that is where an Alternative or Complementary Medicine practitioner comes in. There are many great ones out there, but there are some lousy ones, so you have to select carefully. Here are some thoughts about how to do that. (more…)
